How data gets into Index
Lev populates Index by reading the files you upload to a deal. When you add a document, you can choose to extract facts from it, and Lev will extract structured values from it and maps them to the appropriate fields in Index. There is no manual entry required to get started — upload a file and Lev does the reading.
Index only contains data from files you have explicitly uploaded to the deal. Lev does not pull values from external sources, public records, or data you have not provided. Every field in Index traces back to something your team uploaded or entered.
Where to upload documents
You can upload files to a deal in multiple places:
When creating a deal
When you create a deal, you can upload files and choose to have facts extracted from them
- Click on the Create Deal button to bring up the create deal modal
- Click on the File / Paperclip icon to upload files
- Select your files. Lev extracts and populates fields as it processes each document.
From the Index tab directly
If you are working in Index and want to add a new document, you can upload without leaving the tab.
- Open the deal and navigate to the Index tab.
- Click Import Documents or the upload prompt if Index is empty.
- Select your files. Lev extracts and populates fields as it processes each document.
From the Resources tab
The Files tab on any deal is the primary place to manage your deal documents. Files uploaded here are available for Lev to read and extract from.
- Open the deal and navigate to the Resources tab.
- Click Upload and select your files.
- Lev begins extracting data in the background. Index fields will populate as extraction completes.
Here, you can also see which files had data extracted from them.
- Removing a file from a deal or deleting the file will remove facts and you will have to re-extract
- Files added from storage will not have facts extracted by default, you will have to come to the resources tab to extract facts
Lev can extract data from most common deal document types including:
- Offering memorandums (PDF)
- Rent rolls (PDF, Excel)
- Financial statements and operating statements (PDF, Excel)
- Sponsor packages and bios (PDF, Word)
- Appraisals and third-party reports (PDF)
Higher-quality source documents produce more complete and accurate extractions. Scanned PDFs with low resolution or handwritten documents may result in incomplete extractions.
How Lev handles multiple documents
When you upload more than one document that contains values for the same field, Lev automatically evaluates source quality and selects the most reliable value. Fact prioritization is based on the source itself, the recency of the data, context from the source, and other factors. You will see the selected source labeled next to each field.
If Lev picks the wrong value, you can manually select a different source or enter your own value. Your override becomes the authoritative value for that field. See Managing Your Index Data for details on source selection.
What happens after extraction
Once Lev finishes processing your documents, Index fields will be populated with extracted values. You should review each section to verify accuracy before generating any documents. Fields that could not be extracted will appear empty and can be filled in manually.
